Medela Range of Breastpumps

Medela’s range of breast pumps covers all the potential needs of breastfeeding mums: from initiating breastfeeding for a prematurely born baby to expressing milk to cover the odd night out with the high-performance manual pump Harmony, to exclusive breast milk pumping with our top individual-use double side pump Freestyle. Most pumps feature 2-Phase Expression technology, which mimics babies’ natural sucking rhythms, allowing mums to express more breast milk in less time.

Freestyle double electric breast pump

An innovative pump that fits in the palm of your hand, the Medela Freestyle breast pump is a double electric pump with the high level of performance you can expect from Medela. It includes thoughtful features and provides true mobility, freedom and flexibility. It comes complete with rechargeable lithium battery and storage solutions.

Swing maxi double electric breast pump

If you are looking for a portable double pump by Medela but the price of the Medela Freestyle is above your budget, you may want to consider the Swing maxi. It can be operated with AA batteries (not included).

Swing single electric breast pump

The Swing breast pump is Medela's smallest and lightest 2-Phase pump. Set the Swing on a tabletop, attach it to your pocket or belt with the clip or hang it from the neck/shoulder strap for the most convenient and comfortable position for you.

Mini Electric breast pump

The Medela Mini Electric breast pump is a good compact electric breast pump for mothers who occasionally express. Can be used with batteries.

Harmony manual breast pump

Medela Harmony single manual breast pump is designed for mums who mostly breastfeed and is great for travel or as a backup to your electric pump.

How to choose a breast pump

Every breastfeeding mum has a unique lifestyle and attitude towards breastfeeding. This is exactly why Medela makes a wide range of breast pumps, each one designed to suit a certain lifestyle or situation.

Double or single? Manual or electric pump?

Choosing a breast pump starts with the decision about how often you plan to feed your baby breast milk from a bottle. If you know you will be sharing feeding responsibilities with others more than twice a week, we recommend a breast pump that allows you to express both breasts at once, because simultaneous breast pumping helps to better maintain your milk supply.

If you are feeding breast milk from a bottle twice a week or less, then you can get by with a single breast pump and decide whether to use a manual or electric version.

Reasons to use a breast pump

You may ask yourself whether you will need to buy a breast pump and if so, which one will fit your needs best. A breast pump allows you to express your breast milk so that your baby always has access to what they need most. Most breastfeeding mums purchase a breast pump as part of their breastfeeding experience.

Why buy a breast pump?

There are many reasons for buying a breast pump and for incorporating breast pumping into your breastfeeding routine. Some of these reasons are:
  • It allows your partner to share the rewards and responsibilities that feeding your baby brings.
  • You can get a little more time to yourself.
  • It is useful when returning to work or study.
  • You need to pump milk if your baby is premature or in hospital.
  • Using a breast pump increases breast milk supply in addition to breastfeeding.
  • Pumping helps to initiate lactation if you have adopted a baby or after breastfeeding has been interrupted.
  • It can prevent engorgement and sore nipples.

Choosing the right breast pump

Here are a few things to consider before choosing a breast pump:

  • How often will you, your partner or someone else be feeding your baby breast milk from a bottle?
  • Are you planning on having more children?
  • How long do you plan on feeding your baby breast milk?

Just like breastfeeding, breast pumping is a learned skill. It may take you a few tries to get used to pumping breast milk, and you may not be able to express as much as you expect at first.
